A cervical length scan is recommended by our team to assess your risk of miscarriage or premature birth
This is especially important if you have experienced either of these during a previous pregnancy. The cervix will be assessed for early opening which can increase your risk of preterm delivery or infection. If our expert team identifies any risks we will closely monitor the pregnancy and may recommend follow up scans. These findings will also be communicated to your obstetrician, as you may require treatment of infection as well as a cervical stitch to prolong the pregnancy and keep the cervix closed.
What is a cervical length scan?
A cervical length scan is an important ultrasound that is performed in order to assess your risk of miscarriage or premature birth. It’s especially important if you have experienced either of these issues during a previous pregnancy. The scan may be done anytime between 14 and 37 weeks, depending on your needs.
On routine 19-week scan, the cervical canal was found to be fully open in this pregnancy, with the risk of preterm labour and delivery.
What does a cervical length scan involve?
During a cervical length scan, your cervix will be assessed for early opening, as this can increase your risk of infection and preterm delivery. If A/Prof. Alahakoon identifies any risks, she will monitor your pregnancy very carefully. It may also be advisable to have follow-up scans, in which case A/Prof. Alahakoon will let you know when to come in again. In some cases, you may require treatment for an infection and a cervical stitch may be performed in order to prolong your pregnancy and ensure that the cervix remains closed.
