What to Expect During a 3D/4D Ultrasound

Home Patient Centre Blogs What to Expect During a 3D/4D Ultrasound

One of the most exciting moments during pregnancy is the opportunity to see your baby's features in detail through a 3D/4D ultrasound. Unlike traditional 2D ultrasounds, which provide a flat, black-and-white image, 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional image of your baby, while 4D ultrasounds add the element of real-time movement. If you're scheduled for a 3D/4D ultrasound at the Centre for Women's Ultrasound, here's what you can expect during the procedure.

    1. Preparation
Before your ultrasound, you may be asked to drink 1 glass of water to ensure a clear view of your baby. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable clothing that can easily be adjusted to expose your belly.

    2. Positioning
You'll be asked to lie on a comfortable examination table, and gel will be applied to your abdomen to help the ultrasound probe make better contact with your skin.

    3. Imaging
The ultrasound technician will then gently move the probe over your abdomen to capture images of your baby. In a 3D ultrasound, multiple 2D images are taken from different angles and reconstructed to create a 3D image. In a 4D ultrasound, the images are displayed in real time, allowing you to see your baby's movements.

    4. Visualisation
As the images are captured, you'll be able to see your baby's features in detail, including facial expressions, fingers, and toes. Some ultrasound facilities offer the option to view the images on a large screen, allowing you and your partner to share the experience.

    5. Duration
The length of the ultrasound can vary depending on the position of your baby and the quality of the images obtained. On average, a 3D/4D ultrasound session lasts between 20 and 45 minutes.

    6. Safety
3D/4D ultrasounds are considered safe and have not been shown to cause any harm to the baby or mother. However, it's important to limit the number of ultrasounds you receive during pregnancy to only those recommended by your healthcare provider.

    7. Emotional Experience
For many expectant parents, seeing their baby's face for the first time can be an emotional experience. It's normal to feel a range of emotions, from excitement and joy to awe and wonder.

    8. Medical Purpose
While 3D/4D ultrasounds are primarily used for bonding and enjoyment, they can also provide valuable information about your baby's development. The images can help detect certain birth defects or abnormalities, although a diagnostic ultrasound may be needed for a more detailed assessment.

    9. Souvenir Images and Videos
Many ultrasound facilities offer the option to purchase souvenir images and videos of your 3D/4D ultrasound session. These can be wonderful keepsakes to cherish and share with family and friends.

    10. Follow-Up
After your ultrasound, your healthcare provider will review the images and discuss the findings with you. If any concerns are identified, further testing or monitoring may be recommended. At the Centre for Women's Ultrasound, we understand the importance of this special moment in your pregnancy journey. Our team of experienced ultrasound technicians is dedicated to providing you with a comfortable and memorable experience.
